Both rail and road networks are already under considerable strain.

Most notably the A1(M) narrows from 3 lanes to 2 at Welwyn and traffic is well-known to build up during busy periods, creating mayhem on local roads which turn into rat-runs.  Then there's the East Coast Mainline (ECML) which also narrows over the viaduct through Digswell.

This all means that rail links are nowhere near as good as they would need to be in order to support the size of population envisaged by this house building programme.

Surprisingly the plan to build 10,000 more houses in Welwyn Hatfield does not come with any additional funding to sort out our area's transport issues. The Government seems to believe that it can simply ignore the problem and that somehow it will go away.

We know that the truth is that without additional investment in road and rail, the area would grind to a halt once a predicted 20,000 additional vehicles and 30,000 people hit our streets.
