A vast array of organisations have pledged to support the campaign against the building of 10,000 extra houses in Welwyn Hatfield.  Below are links to each of the groups with their own comments alongside:

Grant Shapps MP is spearheading the No Way To 10k campaign against the overdevelopment of Welwyn Hatfield. He has joined forces with the local newspaper and other parties to fight the proposal.

Grant Shapps said: "The future of our area is too important to leave to chance and I pay tribute to the other political parties and outside groups and bodies who have chosen to throw their weight behind this important campaign."

County councillor Malcolm Cowan seconded an emergency motion condemning the announcement at the county council meeting on June 27, and calling for a cross-county campaign to have it reversed. It was passed unanimously.

"This allocation goes way beyond what either the district, county or region think is suitable for Welwyn Hatfield. We will have to look at the detail of how the proposed change is justified by the inspectors to see how we will fight it, but fight we will" he said.

The residents of the de Havilland site are putting their full support behind their MP. This is a desperate situation that requires as many Hatfield/Welwyn residents as possible to rally behind the flag and fight this injustice

We call upon the WH Council, the County Council and all residents of Welwyn Hatfield and in adjoining areas to join with our MP to actively campaign against undemocratic and draconian dictates of an unelected regional body and its government inspectors, who appear to want to destroy our precious area.

On behalf of the Welwyn Garden City Society, I would like you to add the Society to your list of supporters of the NOWAY to 10K campaign. We are very concerned at the way in which the unelected East of England Regional Assembly appears to be driving ahead with the Government plans to concrete all over our precious Green Belt. They have given no regard to the infrastructure that will be needed to support such a building programme.

North Mymms District Green Belt Society has actively campaigned against the number of dwellings proposed for Welwyn Hatfield by holding mass public meetings.  Now the Society is notifying all 3,600 households in the parish about the latest proposals, is holding a public meeting on 2 October 2006 and is engineering a huge petition for presentation to Welwyn Hatfield Council in October. It will then write to the Minister advising her of the petition results.

Welwyn Garden
Heritage Trust

We unequivocally support Grant Shapps and the leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council in their condemnation of this ill-conceived Government edict to despoil our precious Green Belt.

If this were allowed to happen, the heritage of Welwyn Garden City would be irreversibly damaged. The concept of a rural Green Belt surrounding the town is a most fundamental principle of Garden City design. It acts to keep the size of the town to within a human scale, whilst at our doorstep provides us with the natural joys and benefits of the countryside.

We believe that the Government is not only acting contrary to the principle of upholding environmental amenities and values as laid down in the town’s exclusive estate management legislation, but that its action is also contrary to EU world heritage and historic environment convention.

The Chairman of the Welwyn Hatfield Alliance, Cllr Dr Dennis Lewis states:

“The Executive Board and Members of the Welwyn Hatfield Alliance wish to register, in the strongest possible terms, their objection to the recommendation from the professional independent Panel that an extra 4,200 dwellings be built in this Borough in the period to 2021.

Members of the Board include the Division Commander of the Police, the Chief Executives of the Hospital Trust, Primary Care Trust, Borough Council, Hertfordshire County Council, the University of Hertfordshire, Oaklands College and the Chamber of Commerce plus representatives of local Parish and Town Councils and the voluntary sector; the Alliance therefore has a very wide range indeed of representation of all the community interests in this district.

Our objections are based on the following:

 no evidence has been provided to support the housing allocation

 no technical work has taken place to justify the figures

 no sustainability appraisal or Strategic Environmental Assessment has taken place

 it poses a threat to the Green Belt

 there has been a total lack of consultation or engagement with the local community”
