It's certainly the case that housing is at a premium in Welwyn Hatfield and throughout much of the South East and we agree that more houses need to be built throughout the UK.

The truth is that housing is expensive and that it can be very difficult for first-time home buyers to get on the housing ladder at all. There is also considerable pressure on both the rented market and affordable housing sectors.

However, whilst building more properties is obviously vital, overdevelopment and lack of community involvement is unlikely to create the kind of communities that we would all want to see.

No Way To 10k is keen to see sufficient housing built to satisfy the demand of local people whose children and grandchildren need to be housed, however we think that additional properties -- and we've already agreed to nearly 6,000 more -- should be built after proper consultation with those who already live in the area.  It is essential that there is "buy in" from those who already live here.

At the same time that some neighbourhoods in northern Britain are quite literally being bulldozed and turned back into green fields and parks, in Welwyn Hatfield we face the prospect of large areas of Green Belt being concreted over, with nothing in return for the community. We're calling for a strong say from local people about our own future, plus a guarantee of the resources required to make our neighbourhoods sustainable.
