Much has been said recently about the effects of building many more houses in Hertfordshire, and Welwyn Hatfield in particular, and how this will impact on the quality of life in the most densely populated of the home counties.

However, no one yet has spoken of the potentially catastrophic effect this will have on the bio-diversity of the area.
Much play has been made by Defra of the need to protect and improve the bio-diversity in the UK. Well, now is their chance to do something to do just that.

It may have been a coincidence but about the same time as the inspector’s report demanding more houses in Welwyn Hatfield, bringing the total up to 10,000, the Butterfly Conservation Trust issued an update to its ongoing species survey in Hertfordshire. What it found was Hertfordshire has suffered the loss of more species than any other county in the UK.

No one is suggesting this is all down to house building, but it is a warning sign for us who live here that human activity threatens to destroy natures creatures. So saying NoWay to 10k is not being a Nimby, you might just help prevent losing even more butterflies and moths, let alone all the birds that feed on their caterpillars.
