Official Campaign Against 10,000 New Houses
Being Dumped In Welwyn Hatfield

Without consultation, democratic mandate, evidence or a proper legal investigation the Government has told Welwyn Hatfield to find room for 10,000 extra houses! We believe these decisions should be taken by local communities, not Whitehall.
LATEST NEWS!  The Government is deciding whether Welwyn Hatfield should be stuffed with 10,000 new houses, despite the fact that no one ever voted for the regional Government inspectors who recommended this decision. Now Welwyn Hatfield's Member of Parliament, Grant Shapps MP has worked with the Council and others to mobilise the community to fight these proposals. The 9th March 07 consultation deadline  has passed and we're now waiting on the Secretary of State to confirm her decision.

The consultation deadline has now passed and the letter below remains on this site to provide background to the issue.

Jan 07

Dear Resident,

No one is arguing that Welwyn Hatfield shouldn't take any new houses, in fact the area has already accepted 5,800 new homes can be built by 2020. We agree that more houses must be built.

However now the Government wants us to accept 10,000 new houses instead and this is based on a decision by three unelected and unaccountable Government inspectors sitting somewhere in the Eastern Region.

It should be for local people to determine how many homes are built and where they should go.

No Way To 10k is the cross-party, community-based campaign to fight these crazy plans which lack local involvement or consent.

No consideration has been given to the additional infrastructure that would be required to sustain 10,000 houses. With water as well as roads and transport links already under pressure and no additional money on offer, it's impossible to see how these plans can make sense.

But what makes these plans completely nonsensical is the fact that we're likely to lose our major acute hospital. 40,000 more people, less services!

We all support the principle of providing affordable housing for our children and grandchildren and want to see more homes built, but we see this as an attempt to concrete over large parts of the green belt in Welwyn Hatfield without providing sufficient infrastructure or resources to provide a sustainable environment.

Please help us fight the campaign by signing the petition, getting involved in the discussion forum and most importantly by downloading and reading this information leaflet.

Yours,

Grant Shapps MP

UPDATE!

LABOUR: Having previously supported this campaign by distributing thousands of No Way To 10k leaflets. The local Labour Parliamentary Candidate has now written to withdrawn his Party's support. We regret that this campaign is no longer supported by the Labour Party and are concerned that political pressure may have been applied by Minister's on the local Labour Party forcing them to support excessive house building whilst our local hospital and infrastructure is being rapidly withdrawn.

These two screen grabs provide evidence of the previous Labour support:
